Select Wound Type
In India approximately 1 million (10, 00,000) people suffer from moderate to severe burn injury every year (WHO fact sheet 365). Treating burn wound is challenging because there is no standard way of treatment and improper means may lead to scarring, infections, unnecessary pain and trauma for patients and caretakers, and increased costs. It also has a social impact where the family, attendant and people attached to the patient go through severe mental stress due to treatment cost and longer duration of stay in hospital. It is therefore necessary to select an appropriate wound dressing for the management of burn injury cases.
Published studies have suggested that at any given time, 3% to 10% of hospitalized patients who are weak, low in nutrition and having longer stay, develop pressure ulcer (Bedsores).if unmanaged it may lead to complications like deep wound, bleeding, pain and discomfort. Hence, pressure ulcer management is a challenging task and requires specialized dressing solutions.
Diabetic Foot Ulcer
India with approximately 42 million cases is ranked first in the list of nations most affected with diabetes. It has been estimated that 15% of diabetic patients could suffer from diabetic foot ulcer. If neglected, it could lead to complications of infection, gangrene and often amputation. Hence appropriate treatment with selection of superior wound dressing is essential for timely wound closure and healing of a diabetic foot ulcer.
Studies report that an average venous ulcer requires as much as 6 to 12 months to heal completely and 70% of which could recur within 5 years of closure. Management of leg ulcer cases requires comprehensive approach because they are prone to progress into chronic wounds in 70% to 90% of cases. Without proper treatment, leg ulcer may get infected leading to severe complications.
Effective and total post operative wound management is key to success of any surgical procedure. To prevent infection at the site of incision, wound rupture along the side of sutures and to avoid hypertrophy of scar, advanced wound dressings are required to promote speedy healing without complications.
Acute wounds may be either traumatic or surgical. Factors to be considered when deciding on the choice of dressing include the position, size and depth of the wound, and the level of exudate. Advance wound dressings benefit by offering fast and clean wound healing apart from ease of application and removal of dressing.
